Industry Panel: Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Moderated by Nick Berente, Associate Professor at the University of Notre Dame.
Nick Berente studies how digital innovation drives large-scale change in organizations and institutions. He teaches courses on Strategic Business Technology. Prof. Berente received his PhD from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management. He was an entrepreneur prior to his academic career, founding two technology companies. He is the principal investigator for a number of U.S. National Science Foundation projects and has won multiple awards for his teaching and his research. Prof. Berente is associate editor for MIS Quarterly.
Rob Bearden, CEO of Cloudera, is an experienced enterprise software executive. He was co-founder and CEO of Hortonworks, a publicly traded open-source company that merged with Cloudera in 2019. He also served as President and COO of SpringSource, a leading provider of open-source developer tools, until its acquisition by VMWare in 2009. Before joining SpringSource, Bearden served as Entrepreneur in Residence at Benchmark Capital. He also served as COO of JBoss, a leading open-source middleware company, until its acquisition by Red Hat in 2006.
Erica Hakonson, is the Principal and Founder of Maven Collective Marketing, a digital marketing agency for B2B software/service companies. She has worked extensively with Microsoft, the Microsoft Dynamics reseller community, Intranet Software companies and a variety of other software and applications development businesses. Erica has worn a plethora of hats, helmets and toques during her career as a strategic consultant, marketer, copywriter, website architect, conversion optimizer, nurture marketing designer and paid advertiser. This variety of experience has provided her the opportunity to hone her craft in strategy, analytical marketing and brand positioning for B2B software and B2B software services companies.
Stephany Lapierre is the Founder and CEO of Tealbook. A lifelong entrepreneur, Stephany is one of SCMA’s 100 Influential Women in Canadian Supply Chain and has won many awards for her innovative approach to supplier intelligence. Prior to Tealbook, Stephany built a successful procurement consulting firm focused on helping Fortune 500 companies improve strategic sourcing efficiencies. For more than a decade, Stephany was exposed to the costly and inefficient gap between enterprise buyers and suppliers. In 2014, she launched Tealbook to disrupt the business-to-business directory model by building the largest, most robust and trusted B2B network. Her innovative vision is for Tealbook to enable all companies to connect and find one another with more trust in order to drive their business forward.
Varun Nagaraj (varun_nagaraj@iitbombay.org). Dr. Varun Nagaraj is a practitioner scholar with 30 years of industry experience leading digital product and service innovation and an active research and teaching agenda focused on digital transformation. Currently he is the COO of Bidgely, an AI-based SaaS company enabling digital transformation in the utility sector. Previously, as CEO, Varun led the transformation of Sierra Monitor Corporation, a public company, from an industrial product company to a modern IoT company, culminating in the company’s sale to MSA – a large industrial safety conglomerate. Varun was also a partner at PRTM Management Consulting (now part of PwC), working with Fortune 1000 companies on their organizational innovation initiatives. As a researcher, Varun believes that scholarship should aim to impact practice by exploring industry-relevant research questions and producing non-trivial, non-obvious, and actionable insights.
Bram Warshafsky is the Founder of Shelfgram, a tech start-up that enables brands and retailers with increased in-store visibility and a suite of competitive intelligence tools to find actionable shopper insights, monitor in-store promotions, and spot retail trends before they’re trends. Prior to founding Shelfgram, Bram was the VP of Innovation at sgsco where he led a team of engineers applying artificial intelligence to eCommerce and was instrumental in building and commercializing a new SaaS product with Fortune 500 marketing teams. Bram joined sgsco through the acquisition of 5Crowd, a global platform that connects enterprise marketing and sales departments with top freelancers, which he co-founded. Before 5Crowd, he held various roles within brand management and digital marketing at Johnson & Johnson.
